What is the Student visa 500?
With the Student visa (subclass 500), you can stay in Australia for up to 5 years for the purpose of full-time study at an educational institution.
With this visa you can:
- Engage in an eligible course of study
- include your family members in your application (your partner or you and your partner’s dependent child.
- apply online in or outside Australia
- work up to 48 hours every 2-week period once your course starts. Master by research and Ph.D. students can work full-time. All students can work full time during school holidays.

As per changes announced on March 23 2024:
- English Language requirement
- Minimum test score for college studies (IELTS) 5.5 to 6.0 (or equivalent)
- Minimum test score for taking an English Language Intensive Course for Overseas students (ELICOS) 5.0 or equivalent
- Minimum test score for foundation or pathway programs 5.5 or equivalent
- GS Requirement

- Details of current circumstances, including your ties to your family, community, employment and other financial obligations
- Reasons for choosing the particular course and Australia as your study destinantion
- Merits of studying the chosen course for you
- Educational history
- Reasons for applying for student visa
